The Faith Entrusted Symposium:

Nicaea for the Sri Lankan Church Today

Heads of denominations, church leaders, theologians, and theology students came together on 31st October 2025, to discuss the relevance and importance of the Nicene Creed for the contemporary Sri Lankan Church.

The keynote speaker was Dr Varughese John, Principal, South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies (SAIACS), India. Venerable Samuel Ponniah, Chaplain, S Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, and Vicar, SS Mary and John Church, Nugegoda, was the respondent to the keynote speech on ‘The Nicene Resolution:
The Mystery of God’s Triune Life.

Rev Fr Justin Chawkan, SSS, Provincial Superior of the Province of Christ the Bread of Life, Sri Lanka, responded to the second keynote speech ‘Nicaea and the Church Today’.
Participants also engaged with the Role of the Nicene Creed in the life and worship of the Church, and guarding against theological drift, through workshops held in English, Sinhala, and Tamil, led by CTS faculty and Rev. N. Arulnathan, then-Principal of the Theological College of Lanka.
The symposium held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) marked the 1700th anniversary of the first ecumenical Council of Nicaea, and saw a thrilling gathering of the ecumenical church in Sri Lanka.
