The Faith Entrusted Symposium – NICAEA

img

The ecumenical council of Nicaea (325) and the Nicene Creed are widely recognized across Christian traditions—including Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—as the foundational expression of orthodoxy. This council was, and remains, decisive in shaping the Church’s belief in the divinity of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity, particularly in response to the Arian controversy. As we reflect on the 1700th anniversary of Nicaea in 2025, this milestone presents a timely opportunity to reflect on its historical significance and contemporary relevance for the Protestant Church today.

The Sri Lankan Church continues to face significant challenges, including internal fragmentation and disunity, the spread of false teachings, the diminishing influence of orthodoxy, and external opposition toward certain Christian groups. In light of these challenges, we ask: How does Nicaea—and the spirit of Nicaea—help us address these issues? What role do creedal affirmations and their inherent wisdom play in combating the theological controversies of our time? How does the first ecumenical council invite us to pursue deeper ecumenical unity? And how can the Sri Lankan Church uphold and champion orthodoxy as the herald of the gospel—the good news for all of humanity?

These are just some of the questions we hope to explore at this symposium. If you are interested, please register below. The symposium is ideal for seminary students of all levels, Christian church and institutional leaders, and for anyone actively engaged in theological reflection and engagement. The event will be conducted in all three languages. Also, please note that seats are limited so register as soon as possible through the link below.
